North London Exotic Garden
We were delighted to be asked to build this beautifully detailed garden in collaboration with the talented garden designer Georgia Lindsay. The brief was to create a bold, immersive space inspired by exotic planting, where sweeping organic curves soften the garden and contrast with strong architectural elements to provide year-round structure and interest.
The design centred around extending an existing porcelain terrace into a series of flowing curves that guide you through the garden. Limestone sett pathways weave between generous planting beds, while crisp steel edging defines every curve with precision. Framing the main terrace is a striking bespoke timber screen, creating a strong focal point and adding warmth and texture to the space.
One of the most rewarding aspects of the project was developing the timber feature alongside the designer. Constructed from Thermo Ayous timber and fixed to a Medite Tricoya Extreme backing board, each component was carefully assembled from the reverse to create a seamless finish with no visible fixings. The result is a highly crafted architectural feature that combines clean contemporary detailing with exceptional durability.
Although the garden appears effortless, achieving the flowing curves required meticulous setting out and careful craftsmanship throughout the build. Every porcelain cut and limestone sett was individually shaped to ensure the curves felt natural and balanced, while intricate detailing was required where the steel edging passed through the limestone paving.
The site itself presented its own challenges. With access limited to a narrow side passage and a series of steps, every aspect of the excavation, material deliveries and waste removal had to be carried out by hand. Despite these constraints, the project progressed smoothly thanks to careful planning and the dedication of the site team.
The planting beds were fully prepared with organic matter before planting, and a comprehensive irrigation system, including lawn sprinklers, was installed to support the long-term establishment of the garden. Working closely with the designer throughout the project ensured every detail was delivered exactly as intended.
The finished garden is a wonderful balance of soft, natural movement and crisp contemporary detailing. Rich planting, flowing hard landscaping and beautifully crafted timber joinery combine to create a space that feels both immersive and highly refined, providing the clients with a garden that is as enjoyable to look at as it is to spend time in.
